Answer:

If you have a specific film in mind, please submit a request via the Course Reserves System

  • Streaming format is preferred for all courses regardless of teaching modality--online, hybrid, or in-person.
  • Physical disk formats will be purchased when streaming is not available to academic libraries or is cost-prohibitive. Blu-ray is preferred over DVD. Disks will be placed on reserve and available to show in class and/or available for students to watch in the Library.

Note: Attempting to stream a video or play a DVD while sharing your screen during a Zoom session is not recommended because of sound and image quality issues that can occur.

The Library cannot offer full digitization of media for course reserves based on guidance from the DePaul Office of General Counsel (OGC) due to copyright restrictions. Only a small percentage--no more than 10% of the content--can be digitized legally.

A common misconception is that the Library can simply make available content that streams on such commercial services such as HBO and Netflix. Such services have subscription models based on individual access and not institutional access. We will always investigate if alternative access is possible, but that is not always the case.
